Strikers

A striker can make or break the sound of a call. Some striker woods pair better with some surfaces, while others tend to run on most any surface available. I offer a variety of woods, both domestic and exotic in order to get the most from your Lights Out Custom Calls.

Frog blanks laminate strikers

Laminate strikers come standard with each Lights Out Custom Calls anodized aluminum call. They also run well on most other surfaces. They tend to produce a bright, bold sound with good volume and rasp. The Frog Blanks material currently being used is 100% sourced and produced here in the U.S.A. Color patterns listed are exclusive to Lights Out Custom Calls, with the exception of the Dark Ops pattern (solid black) coming soon.

Solid wood strikers

The woods pictured below offer a variety of density and grain structure that result in different pitches and tones produced. Additional woods may be available in limited quantities. * I do not work with ebony, leopardwood, cocobolo, tulipwood and other high end exotics.

Striker woods

The accompanying table shows the compatibility of striker woods and call surfaces. A rating of zero to three asterisks (*) have been assigned to each striker wood for each surface. The more asterisks, the better the sound on that surface.

Flared tips

Each striker is turned with a semi-flared tip. This shape proves to be more forgiving of striker angle on most surfaces. To condition your striker tips – Hold the striker with the tip upwards between the thumb and forefinger of your dominant hand. Using a piece of 150 or 120 grit sandpaper in your off hand, make short strokes from the center of the domed tip outwards towards the edge as you rotate the striker between your thumb and forefinger. This method will maintain the domed shape of the striker tip as it comes with the call.
